FAMA speaks to Orrr Dhiravarangkura

FOUNDER BRAINBOW | SYDNEY

Orrr likes making things. He likes to use big, industrial machines to make these things.

Our man once owned a Heidelberg printer. It was parked in his garage, while the poor family car had to sit outside.

The four-wheeler must have got its hopes up when Orrr decided to sell the Heidelberg, thinking it could finally reclaim its rightful place inside the home, but no sooner had he got rid of the printer (it took him three months just to move the damn thing out the front door) than he replaced it with a CNC machine.

The car's still outside, muttering curses about the unfairness of life.

Judging by the popularity of Brainbow, it might have to settle for second place for a while longer.

What started out as a fun side project has now become a full-fledged brand, loved and adored by hundreds of people that simply can't get enough of Orrr's quirkiness and keep coming back for more.

Brainbow's collection of goodies includes brooches and earrings, lockets and wallets, retro boomboxes and record players, and plenty more.

He's just finished designing and making a beautifully simple laptop stand, so fresh it still has saw dust on it, and the sweet smell of cut wood hangs in the air.

He pulls out a pair of glasses he designed two years ago that he's thinking of revisiting. Made from layered wood, it's solid and chunky and all kinds of awesome.

Orrr's brain works non-stop. His eyes burn bright with an insatiable thirst for creating. It really is something to behold.

The man likes to collect things too. Sunglasses, typewriters, clocks and dolls... there's no shortage of quirky antique stuff from around the globe on display. He's running out of real estate to keep all these things, he says, but it's hard to stop.

The house is truly a wonderland of beautiful products and machines to make beautiful products with.

After a tour of all the different workstations and scores of artefacts lying about, we step out for a coffee to talk some more. We're in the middle of discussing his future plans when Akiko, his wife calls to find out where he's parked the car and Orrr tries to remember.
