FAMA speaks to
Ana Rita Sousa & Ivano Salonia

PHOTOGRAPHERS | AMSTERDAM

It's another gorgeous day in Amsterdam when we meet Ana Rita and Ivano for a coffee before a short cycle ride and ferry to Ivano's studio in NDSM wharf.

The place is a former ship yard, now cultural hotspot bursting with artist studios, exhibitions and music concerts. Someone's sprayed a wall with the words 'Make art. Not Euro.' Ivano co-rents a space here, one of several studios scattered across this huge industrial space with installations and art of all kinds lying about.

It's almost as if there is an overdose of creativity and no one knows what to do with it. It makes for the perfect backdrop for the portraits we want to take. In no time we have them looking through periscopes and standing on cubes. Ivano even gives us a demonstration of his rock-climbing abilities by hanging from an overhead ladder.

Ana Rita and Ivano are a photographer duo. Under the guise, Iloveyouwhenyousmile, they’ve been photographing and exhibiting their work around the world for close to a decade now, which is also how long they've been together as a couple. They are interested in people and behaviours, bodies and movements. They like to create intimate environments of trust on their shoots, so their models can be themselves in front of their lenses. They're going to mark ten years of being together (2019) with a series of intimate photographs that they've taken of each other over the years.

Titled Super Naked, it is a documentation of the several meanings of being naked in front of each other as partners in life and work. A contemplation of all the highs and hardships that come with being a creative couple. They give us a sneak peek and we love the beautiful honesty and vulnerability in the shots. We also notice a difference in the two styles of photography. "People always ask us who takes the photographs," Ivano says, "But when we shoot as a duo, we both take the photograph. We plan it together, the whole shot, and then it doesn't matter who pulls the trigger."

Ivano's taken time off from advertising to work on his personal stuff. In addition to photography, he's recently discovered the world of VR and can't get enough of it. He shows us a giant artwork (in that world it is) he's been working on and talks excitedly about it like a child about a new toy. The man's also a musician and wants to get back to making tunes.

Ana Rita has her own set of projects to keep her busy. She's currently putting together a book of analogue photographs she's taken over the years. She's been sticking them in a book with colourful tape strips as she designs the book manually and meticulously. She hopes to launch it sometime next year.

It's so great to hear about all their projects. 2019 could be a big year for these two with the exhibitions and launches they've got planned. Hopefully we can be around for the fun.

Thanks for having us.
