FAMA speaks to Jack Samels
COLLAGE ARTIST | AMSTERDAM
Jack grew up on in Massachusetts on the edge of wilderness and so his art is heavily influenced by the outdoors.
He likes to mix the two worlds of collage and painting, to create something new altogether. Does a collage have to look like a collage?
To him, they're more like paintings. And, in the future, he wants to be able to paint them, to give them yet another dimension.
Essentially, he'd be painting a collage that looked like a painting. Talk about pushing the boundary. We love it.
Jack started out by cutting up beautifully shot magazines he liked. This came with its restrictions, as he was limited by the size of the magazine he was cutting up.
To combat that, Jack's started taking his own photographs now, which he can print to any size he likes. Take that magazine limitations.
He likes to work with his hands. He's been a carpenter and has run a sculpting studio. His work has a wonderful tactile feel to it.
He is drawn to metal and rope, blue plastic bags and chrome scooter carriers, the kind of ordinary everyday objects that most people don't spend too much time looking at.
Jack spends all of his free time and money photographing these things and then cutting them up.
Success to him is simply investigating the things he's interested in.
He works out of a beautifully rundown studio that the owners let him rent for cheap to keep the squatters away. It's a massive space with overgrown grass and dirty windows, the perfect hideaway studio.
This is his refuge, his block of wilderness that he can escape to from the commercial and chaotic world of his advertising life.
It takes him at least half a day to un-see all the junk and feel inspired again. There are times when he doesn't quite manage it and has to leave and come back another time.
He tells us he's intent on keeping his artist persona separate to his commercial life. "Do people really need to know I worked on a global campaign?" he wonders out loud.
We certainly don't think so. But they sure need to see his art. Because it's awesome. And very unique.
Jack sells some of his prints to friends and he's had a few exhibitions, but he feels there's so much that the world hasn't seen.
Hopefully we can help change that. Hands up who'd like to see a FAMA gallery.
